Department of Ophthalmology started with the establishment of Hanyang University Hospital in May, 1972. Professor Chung-Je Koh was appointed to be the department’s first Head Professor and the department head. Later, Professor Joon-Kyu Choi, Cheol Hong, Myeong-Gyu Koh, Ki Bang Uhm and Byung Ro Lee took office, and, Professor Heeyoon Cho, Mincheol Seong, Min-Ho Kang, Han Woong Lim, Yong Un Shin, Seong Joon Ahn and Won June Lee are currently in position.
Significant progress has been made on the facilities in the department through renovation and addition of buildings to the outpatient wing of the Hanyang University Seoul Hospital in 2004. Department of Ophthalmology at Hanyang University Guri Hospital also has made great progress since the opening of the hospital in 1995 through renovation of the outpatient ward, the introduction of the one-day ward and the day ward system in 2005 and 2011.
Ophthalmology takes improving the quality of life through promotion of the people’s eye health as its top priority. Its specified fields include retina, anterior segment, glaucoma, pediatric strabismus and neurological ophthalmology, and plastic ophthalmology. The department strives to providing the patients with well-organized, specialized consultations and care that they require.
